From the Inside Out

There is nothing that gives me anxiety like counting days to something happening; a birthday party, big concert, interview, exam results, even getting my period😂. I bet most if not all of us suffer from anxiety about one thing or the other but do we actually know that anxiety is a mental health disorder?

Ding ding ding! You guessed correct if you thought this article is about mental health. It is. I am going to try and talk (well write) about MENTAL HEALTH and i want this and the forthcoming articles after this to reach as many hearts as possible so if you get to read this kindly do share and feel free to comment below on your thoughts and sentiments. Its about time we all stopped ignoring and started talking about mental health.

Anyone who was an avid reader of my articles way back (it has been loooong since i wrote) is probably wondering what an interesting topic to have for a come back. It is a sensitive topic that has a soft spot in my heart mostly because i have been affected in one way or the other and i was caught offguard. I was forced to take a small step at a time to try and get my emotions together and comprehend the situation and i figured the only way that i would actually understand it all is by schooling myself. Over the past few weeks, i have been reading lots of articles and PDF formats on mental health and hopefully ill help one or two of us out here.

I asked a few of my friends and colleagues what was the first thing that comes to their minds when they heard the word mental. The responses were absurdly ranging on the negative. I didnt judge cause if i was asked the same a few weeks ago i would have given a few of those answers myself. Too much weed, alcoholic, cursed, Mathari hospital, unfocused, not smart  (schoolwise), witchcraft, cocaine and hard drugs. These were the popular answers that i got. Now lets throw away these and get to the facts. In this article ill be brushing on the basics of mental health and ill expound on the article/s to follow.

Contrary to what everyone thinks to be mental health as i shared above, it is actually more than just going crazy and being admitted to a psych ward. Mental health is a state of well-being where one recognizes their abilities,is able to copewith the normal stresses of life, work productively and fruitfully, and make a contribution to their communities. I derived this from a WHO article. Its being able to be self aware of your emotions and intellectual capacity and dealing accordingly. Remember back there when i said that most of us suffer from anxiety and that it is a mental disorder? Makes sense now right?

If anxiety itself is a disorder can you imagine how many mental disorders there are? And here you were laughing, looking down upon or disgracing those people you heard going for therapy or are hospitalised or seen them on the street and crossed the streets so fast cause you thought they would snatch your purse. Yes! Its a big shame! Want to know why? Cause once upon a time in your life even for a split second you were not able to cope with your emotions or feelings. That being said i hope your perspective of this has changed even a little on this topic.

Medical conditions and diseases associated with mental illness include:

  • Bipolar
  • Schizophrenia

Now now i know you probably thought i was going to list one or two at most four things on this list and now you see how long it is! And it is not even all of them! 😮🙁😨 I had the same reaction believe me and i have had one of these even without knowing…the anxiety i mentioned above. From the above list you now know that not every mental disorder or illness is substance abuse related. I will expound on the major ones in the subsequent articles but for now i do hope that someone out there has a different perspective of mental illness; that they will not snear or ignore those people around them whose condition had gotten to the extreme cause you or someone close to you has had a disorder before or is going to have one at any time. I hope that after i am done with this mini series that we can put our #headstogether and talk about mental health.
Remember whatever you are going through, it sucks but its not forever.

With plenty of love,

The One Child😊
